Sustainability and community: education as the definitive bridge between mining and society

Today, October 9, we are officially releasing the third episode of Yoy Podcast, a series hosted by Juan Reyes where we talk with leaders and key voices who are transforming the mining industry.

In this edition we are joined by Raphael Delgado, General Manager of CETEMIN (Centro Tecnológico Minero), an organization that has had an extraordinary impact by training and placing more than 18,000 young people in mining jobs through a unique model of immersive education and residential programmes.

A direct conversation between education, technology and real operations

In this episode, the conversation digs into how to effectively connect technical training with the real needs of mining companies, looking at the value of human capital and the future of work:

  • The myth of the "optimal education model": Raphael reflects on why educational institutions should not settle into traditional methods, but reinvent themselves constantly in the face of advances in technology and artificial intelligence.

  • A shortage of talent, or a shortage of opportunities?: The episode looks at the critical role mining companies must take on in offering first jobs to young graduates, showing that the technical ability is there when the right doors are opened.

  • Women's inclusion beyond the talking points: Real inclusion of women on site requires changing mindsets, organizational culture and infrastructure (spaces, workwear and respect), not just "opening doors".

  • Education as a bridge to the community: Technical training in mining areas has to be planned years before a project starts, so that local families become real protagonists in the development of their region.

  • Technology and immersion in learning: The episode highlights how bringing in YOY simulators and immersive technology helps build high-performance technical and safety skills while speeding up the students' learning curve.
