Anglo American, a global mining powerhouse, has undertaken one of the most ambitious industrial projects of our time—the development of Quellaveco, Peru’s first fully autonomous mine.

The Quellaveco mine project was initiated in 2018, and after years of rigorous planning, infrastructure development, and cutting-edge technological integration, copper production officially began in mid-2022. Now in 2024, the mine is fully operational and continues to scale its capabilities to achieve its production targets while setting new benchmarks in mining automation and sustainability.

Yoy’s contribution to this transformation took place in 2024, when we collaborated closely with Anglo American to develop high-fidelity XR (Extended Reality) animations that enhanced the effectiveness of industrial training. Our professional-grade 3D animation technology has been seamlessly integrated into Anglo American’s workforce training, ensuring employees are equipped to safely and effectively operate in an advanced digital mining environment. 

Over 7,235 staff members were trained using Yoy’s 3D animations at Anglo-American Quellaveco.

How the Collaboration Unfolded

This project was the result of a meticulous and collaborative process between Yoy’s team and Anglo American’s mining operators.

Defining Business Needs: Piero Ampuero Pisani, Peru Country Manager at Yoy, worked hand in hand with Anglo American’s mine operators to define the precise training requirements essential for safe and efficient autonomous operations. "Understanding the mine’s specific needs was crucial. Our goal was to ensure that the training animations aligned perfectly with the realities of day-to-day operations," said Ampuero Pisani.

Transforming Needs into High-Quality XR Animations: Once the business needs were clearly outlined, Yoy’s team, led by CTOs Viktor Penaloza and Sergio Silva, translated these requirements into highly detailed and operationally relevant 3D animations. "We realized that with our XR simulation technology, we could transform and accelerate the creation of 3D videos for safety. What previously took weeks due to long rendering times, is now done in real-time. This allowed us to focus on what's important: on iterating ideas in a way that would be impossible with traditional methods, without sacrificing quality and precision." said Viktor Penaloza. "This was a challenge, but with our team's expertise, we achieved outstanding realism and precision," added Sergio Silva.
